about Hévíz

Hévíz and its surroundings

Hévíz, the charming little town, is located in Zala County, near Lake Balaton. It’s main attraction is the world-famous Lake Hévíz and its beautiful environs. The healing power of the lake is especially beneficial for those who have musculoskeletal disorders. The history of Lake Hévíz dates back to ancient times. The water of the lake is ideal for open-air bathing both winter and summer. The temperature in winter does not fall below 22°C and can reach 38°C in summer. You don’t need to go anywhere else to have, for example, a great shopping experience. The market at the main entrance of the town offers different fruits and vegetables, arts and crafts…, a wide variety of products. The ’Dotto’ sightseeing train takes you on a trip around the town. However, also with a pleasant walk, you can easily reach the picturesque little church form the Árpád era and the many family-run taverns and wine bars located on the edge of town. From here, you will have a wonderful view of the hills and valleys of Zala County. In the centre of Hévíz, in Deák Square, you can enjoy fairs and festivals during the summer. Those who want more challenge, can join cycling and hiking tours, enjoy hot-air ballooning, play golf, tennis, water sports, go horse-riding and so forth.

Keszthely, the capital of Lake Balaton, can also be easily reached by bike. The beautiful Festetics Palace and several museums and restaurants await visitors in this pleasant city. From here, you can reach other towns around Lake Balaton by taking e.g. a boat cruise on the lake. A great adventure park is located in the town of Gyenesdiás, Vonyarcvashegy provides windsurf school and waterski course on its beach, and ’Szépkilátó’ (which literally means ’Nice viewpoint’) in Balatongyörök offers one of the best views of Lake Balaton. For those more interested in historical places, buildings, Szigliget and Sümeg are must-see attractions in the area. Near Sümeg, in the village of Zalaszántó, stands on a mountain the bright white Peace Stupa. The romantic castle ruins of Rezi and Tátika are also worth a visit.
